I’ll admit it. I love a mindless scroll as much as the next person. TikTok has eaten more hours of my life than I care to count. But when you run a wedding business, every shiny new app feels like another thing you’re supposed to keep up with. Do you really need TikTok in your life, or can you give it a miss and still do just fine?
I’ve been asked this a lot lately, so let’s get honest about it.
First up, if you’re already drowning in Instagram, emails, and just keeping your head above water, you are not behind. No one is coming to check if you’ve posted on TikTok. It is not essential for everyone. If you’ve been a little bit curious, or your couples seem to be getting all their ideas from TikTok, it might be worth a stickybeak.
What even is the TikTok vibe?
Instagram is polished. TikTok is not. It is more behind-the-scenes, more “I tripped over my words and I’m posting it anyway,” and a lot less curated. Couples on TikTok love a budget reveal, a venue walkthrough, a how-to, or just the real, messy bits. The experts here are not always the pros. They are the ones who pick up their phone and show the guts of how it works.
Is it just for the kids?
If your couples are mostly under forty, you will probably find them here. But it is not just Gen Z. I have seen everyone from florists to cake makers, stylists, venues, celebrants – just about anyone – getting a bit of love on TikTok. What seems to work best are the bits that never make it to your website. The prep, the mess, the funny moments, the “here’s what you did not see” stories.
Not a video person? Me neither.
Good news. You do not have to dance, you do not have to lip sync, and you do not even have to show your face if you do not want to. Some of the best wedding TikToks I have seen are just hands arranging flowers, someone icing a cake, a time-lapse of the setup, or a quick walk through the empty venue before guests arrive. Just film what you are already doing. If you want to talk, it can be as rough or rambly as you like. Start with something couples always ask, or a tiny tip you wish people knew.
What if you’re already running on empty?
Reuse what you have. If you have already made a Reel, chop it up for TikTok. Next time you are at a wedding, grab a few seconds of video on your phone, mess and all. Do not feel pressured to use every trending sound or jump on every meme. If a song catches your ear, use it. If not, skip it. Add your city or region as a hashtag so locals can find you. Hashtags like #PerthWeddings or #SydneyFlorist work well. Keep your captions simple. Share a tip, a truth, or just something that made you laugh.
But does it actually work?
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I have seen vendors get a booking from a single video. I have seen others post for months and just end up with a few more friendly faces in their DMs. Most of the time, it is about putting your name out there and giving people a feel for what it is like to work with you. Honestly, the less you overthink it, the better.
Already over social media?
Give yourself permission to ignore it. If you want to test the waters, set yourself a tiny goal. Try one TikTok a week for a month. If it feels like a chore, walk away and never look back. Your business will survive. And if you end up loving it, even better.
One thing I will say is this. Even if you decide never to post a single video, it is worth a good scroll, just to see what your potential couples are watching and talking about. Sometimes that little window into their world is all you need.
Final thought
TikTok is just another tool in the box. You get to decide what is worth your energy. No medals for trying everything. But if you’re there? Pop over and give us a follow, we’d love to see what you’re posting.
