When was your wedding and where did it take place?
We got married on August 9, 2010 (8.9.10). This date had special meaning to me and my husband because he proposed to me on August 8, 2008 (8.8.08). Our wedding was at the Painswick Rococo Gardens in the Cotswolds of England.
Who is the designer of your wedding gown and where did you purchase it?
The designer of my dress, “Walking on Waves”, is Kelima K, a couture wedding dress designer in New York City. Kelima makes her dresses by hand and are fully customized for each bride. Since my wedding, Kelima and I have become close friends…I even attended her fashion show at New York fashion week! Her vision and attention to detail is inspiring. She has made hundreds of brides feel beautiful and unique by her incredible eye and artistry.
When did you know that your wedding gown was “the one”?
On a beautiful fall day, I saw the dress in Kelima’s store while walking in SOHO, NYC just after we became engaged–it was absolutely breathtaking. My husband encouraged me to try the dress on and so we accidently broke this tradition when he saw me in it. However when he saw me, he had tears in his eyes–so after trying this dress on I knew it was “the one” just like I knew he was “the one” for me 🙂 I didn’t even bother trying on any other wedding dresses after that one! Soon, every visiting bridesmaid and family member would be taken to Kelima K to see it. The dress took 3 months to make and was worth every minute!
What is your absolute favorite memory from your wedding day?
It had to be walking up the aisle with my dad and seeing everyone I loved at the altar. It was the most beautiful walk between wildflowers up to an atrium, while our musician/friend played our song. Just thinking about this gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes–what a special day!
Why did you want to get your wedding gown cleaned and preserved?
This dress is one of the most special items I own, and I wanted it preserved for my future daughter and years to come.
Why did you decide to bring your wedding gown to a member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists?
My mother and I waited a long time before preserving and cleaning the gown, because we needed to find a professional who would be able to handle this delicate material with care and respect. As my mom described, the material has the texture of a baby’s blanket, so we knew that we would have to find somebody who has an outstanding reputation and allowed their work to speak for itself.
Handing over my dress was a scary moment, but Kathy’s warm demeanor and the reputation of Kimmel Wedding Gowns Iin the area made me feel like my dress was in the best hands. My dress is now lovingly restored and looks as good as the day I saw it for the first time on that fall day in NYC.
